My dolmar 5105 died today

so i have got a bit muddled, but can someone clarify- if i'm looking to buy a makita/dolamr 5000 or similar which are the models/years to avoid?

 

also i use red stihl oil on all saws is this going to be a bother?

 

 

 

It might be, Husky blamed it for a seizure on my 560XP after 20 hours. They advise using their synthetic additive.

 

I now use my red Sthil additive as diesel additive in my old MF 135, the new diesel formulations have no sulphur for lubrication, plays hell with the injection pump.

I had the same thing on one of my import 5100S. On mine it damaged the piston and ring, and the pot looked like it was damaged, but when I got into it, I managed to polish it out. Got a new piston and ring from the US and it was a cheap repair. I still have the saw now and its still going strong (Think this happened about 2 years ago)

 

I also modded the exhaust at this time to help it run a bit cooler.

 

Worth checking it out before you write the saw off as it was a cheap repair

back in 2010 i bought my ps-5105 from you when you where selling them i changed the muffler and put on the non cat muffler have'nt had any problems but i have noticed on the ps420sc that the exhaust gets too hot :thumbup:

Hmmm my cat muffler does get ruddy hot, time to start thinking of a euro chimney but dunno if fits with the redpower carb...

the cat on that 420 does get a bit hot too jon your saw had a different carb from mine when we put them together if i remember correctly i see there where two different carbs used and three different muffler's one cat and two non cat

Sorry, it's catalytic reduction of UHC's and not thermal destruction of NOx in the gaseous phase.

 

But yes they have to be hot to work.

Fried top ends were very common on the 5100S, and at least the early (14.500rpm) 5105s in the US. Lean carb settings from the factory (to pass emission rules) and substandard top end cooling, combined with high rpm were among the identified reasons.

 

The introduction of cat mufflers made it possible to set the carbs a bit richer, but of course it added to the heating issue.....
