I put water on the fire 1 night back in winter to calm it down and now it's a bit rusty.

It's cast, any tips on what's best to clean it up.

Hi Stephen wire brush then black lead the front thanks Jon

try the finest wet and dry paper prob 2000 grit to remove the rust then brasso and elbow grease to bring the shine back

 

or maybe a brillo cloth like the car repairers use

You could try a wire brush that fits onto an electric drill, you can buy them at b & q
