Yes, I had thought about routing it out, but I don't currently have any bit that are wider that the router spindle, as the recess is 3" deep, should just about be possible. -next time, pics to follow :001_smile:

how wide are the feet, 3x3"?

you don't need a very wide bit to rout out the whole groove, you use a 1/2" bit about 3" long should do the trick and just need a router that plunges to that depth. take out a bit at a time (3/4" on green oak) and keep passing it about till you need to plunge in further.

if you can't get a bit long enough then have you thought about half lapping the feet?

Thanks Steve, it's routing to the depth I thought would be difficult, I realise about the multi pass method.

Yes, I was quite impressed by the way such a heavy thing could stick out of the wall like that. (3rd pic)

It's arbtalk that rotates the pictures, they're not like that on my PC, no idea how to stop it doing that.

Looking to make a similar product as a feature now the cottage renovation is coming along. Have looked for a suitable bit, with limited success. Anyone have any suggestions of suppliers and obviously it will be hard and slow going, but are the bits able to be resharpened and how long are the drive shaft on them?
