Number Two

This is my second go at chainsaw carving. It's supposed to be an authentic Cherokee indian bust carved from a log that has been growing on the high street in my home town for decades. What would you lot use to finish it? I want it to last forever and I want the cracking to stop. What are my options?

Very nice indeed and if that's a 2nd attempt at cs carving you have a natural talent.

 

ref cracking/rot, plenty of decking oil until no more will absorb thin the 1st coat if you like but if it wants to crack it will. Keep it from direct sunlight and winds and raised from the ground to reduce wicking of moisture.

That would be a log wouldn't it ?

i use decking oil as it has good penetration and if you slowly build up layers it forms a nice hard (ish) shell

yep oil should slow it down. i've heard of folk wrapping things in plastic or wet canvas to keep moisture in at night when they are working on it. unfortunatley wood in the round loves to split. carving from quartered pieces can help, sorry i know that doesn;t help you. you want it to dry as slow as possible. nice carving!
