getting into climbing

I guess thats fair comment, but I would argue that you can still climb to industry and HSE standards with simple line and harness, but if you take the harness out of the situation you are either attached by your belt (which having tried it and is incredibly uncomfortable) or you are tying a harness around yourself from the end of the your line which seems rather laborious and again uncomfortable.

Or is there something I am missing...?

Funny how nobody mentions a climbing helmet.

As has been pointed out you can manage with minimum kit. But you won't want to.

I'd suggest:

37mm rope, 13mm Yale xtc is excellent to start with.

Work positioning harness. Komet Butterfly is a reasonable basic one

2 prussik loops. Make your own to save money. 3m of Marlow Boa 9mm will do you 2 loops.

5m of any rope over 11mm for a lanyard.

3 TRIPLE ACTION (not double action as suggested previously) karabiners. Pick any.

Climbing helmet.

First aid kit

Small folding knife

And most importantly, common sense. You'll struggle to buy that though.

The Tree Climbers Companion is a great book that should contain everything you need to know.

No, you can climb to industry standards with just a rope. Rope harnesses aren't difficult to tie once you work out what size you are, you can even tie a rope hitch tending pulley if you're feeling really fancy. It probably isn't the greatest for long term working but it's bearable if that's your only choice.

I'd never suspend myself from my belt, that would just be silly
