The Jack Hargreaves TV series in the distant past had two episodes, one on re-tyring an iron tyred wheel and one where he visited a factory that still made them. Very interesting and you maybe able to find them on youtube.

just read that robinia was also used for the hub as its so hard wearing. probably good for the rest of the wheel too to be fair...

I built a Vardo some years ago, the wheels I had made for it used Iroco, & never gave me any problems, & that waggon got used every day for years, still going now, it weighed about a ton empty.

what would be the ideal mc%? i dont have much dry oak ready, so would need to cut more

not seen it done for a long time the out of town was filmed at houghton nr stockbridge. the firm are still there but stopped making wheels now into buildings.

but as for the iron wheel thia was fused together in forge to make band as other posts the band was then made dark red hot on a open fire they then grabed the band and was fitted to wheel which was on a spindle in ground as it started to burn they knocked it on wheel untill it was on then doused it with watering cans to cool it down so shrunck on wheel. its still being done as the wheels for royal carriages still need to be kept up together along with the royal horse artillary and plenty of lesiure waggons.

You want it as dry as you can, otherwise they can loosen & creak in hot weather when the mc% drops, do you remember the famous painting, 'the haywain' by Constable, they would stop in shallow water to expand a creaking wheel, (& water the nag).

In very sunny conditions I used to hang my bedding over the wheels facing south, to air the bedding & protect the wheels from prolonged exposure.
