best 3.5 tonne with big payload?

Hi Guys .Im currently driving a transit with crew cab n ali sides and a tail lift and payload is not even a half a tonne so i was wondering what do guys on here would recommend for that range because i cant drive anything more then 3.5.so please give me your opinions what van would be good so i ll have a word with boss to change it. cheers

The short wheel base Isuzu, Mitsubishi etc trucks will give the best payload as they are the lightest around. The poor buggers in the cab get bounced around a bit though. A 4WD tipper will give a tonne or so payload and will go most places, though they are costlier to buy and to run.

To stay within the law, and keep undet 3.5 tons (disregarding comfort/convenience/reliability) ----

1. Be old enough to tow over .75t, or take your test if you are not 'ancient'.

2. Get a landrover defender (or powerful Jap equivalent which can tow lots).

3. Strip off everything from the back of the vehicle and mount a turntable chipper.

4. Buy a 3.5 ton trailer and chip into that.

 

You'll do well to match THAT payload with any 3.5 ton truck.

 

Has anyone on here done this? or if you need to frequently shift such loads then go get ops license and do it properly.

You may need a tacho for that but that's no big deal, just need to keep records of drivers hours. Having often towed with Defender and Discovery with 2.7 tonnes of trailer fully loaded I do not know that I would want the weight of a chipper on the vehicle as well. 2.7 tonnes can be a handful.

Double cab transits are heavy with a bad pay load I sold mine ages ago and replaced it with a single can transit tipper, the single cab transit is 2000kgs empty so will give you about 1.4 tonnes payload once you & your kit are in there
