So what happens if you need a repair or service?

In the States what helps Makita, Echo and Efco become popular is their attachment to hardware chains and big box stores like Home Depot and True Value, or rebadging as with John Deere, etc. The US has a very strong DIY culture, often willing to pay a bit more for perceived quality in tools like chainsaws. Very few homes outside the immediate city centres would not have a chainsaw, if not several. Add in a lot more serious storms than we have here, and they become essential kit in many places in the US.

Might be a blessing in disguise judging by Stihl's current products and attitude.

 

They'll all be selling Echo and Husky then, which I seem to see more of in dealers than Stihl, of late. Wonder why!

I have had such bad experiences with local Stihl dealers, some even quoting 20-30% more than rrp for strimmers and such that I found a dealer some many many miles from me somewhere else who not only is willing to do discounts because I am trade but also posts the stuff out to me for free...I even got a Stihl saucy calender for Christmas

 

He has even discussed with me the possibility of doing carriage back and forth for servicing once a year, or I might just just drive there in the winter stay over a night and get the stuff done all at once.

Genuine customer feedback to him re his business, how valuable is that?

I would forget it, most stihl dealers are strokers and stihl don't really care anyway.
