Tom did you make up the 4 way head yourself or can you get that with the machine? I'm looking for one too, what model was that?

Thats the 16ton one, the 4 way knife came with it.

Thats the 16ton one, the 4 way knife came with it.

I found the cross head on my thor splitter pretty useless on anything wider than 8 inch dia. The knife blades were not long enough to split right out to the edge of the timber, meaning you had to cut twice.

Most models that push the wood through the knife don't seem to have this problem.

just be aware guys, the more blade surface area you have e.g. 2,4,6,8 way blades, then the more power (tons) you need to push the wood through

Posch are supposed to be a good make, but one thing i'd say about the on in the vid is if its only nine ton it will struggle with a lot of tree surgery stuff. You'll notice they dont put anything tough through it, its all nice streight pieces.

Its hard to see in the vid I posted but the knife is stopped by one of the pieces at 8 ton and I go up to 16ton to crack it. I reckon to split most stuff with a 4 way knife 15 of 16 ton is a minimum, preferably with a 2 speed pump.

i find the upright petrol log splitters are very good ..

iv the honda 9hp model, its not as quick as the prosesser, but it takes alot of beating....it also splits any round wood,and is excellent on fuel too...

 

That's interesting, there seems to be very few vertical splitters around. I have a home-mader on the back of my Grey Fergie and am in the middle of making a trailer version using a Honda 9hp engine and 16gpm pump with a 24" x 3½" ram.

 

What kind of machine do you have?. Any pics?.
