Might get an old hp pocket pc for that, keep an eye on eBay. Gps ok for safety surveys, for 5837s you'd want a topo with trees marked already.

A couple of threads on this somewhere, try a site search...

NB if you go for this option, to download data youy need Active Sync which only works with Windows XP or earlier. I had to buy an ancient laptop just to get my Dell Axim data off.

Would a basic gps unit e.g. Garmin do for basic plotting of trees?

Thanks

The signal under canopy will be reduced if using a basic handheld unit which means identifying the specfic tree will be difficult. I've recently tried to re-visit some planting that was done in a valley with no canopy and it was useless. You can get more expensive ones with seperate aerials but they cost a fortune.

You can get a Satmap Active Ten off ebay for under £100, various maps available, very good bit of kit.

Here is their website, if you pay a yearly sub, you get all the online mapping ability.

Probably a bit over the top for what you want, but worth considering, have a good read of the website.

I've tried using a satnav doing this job, it was useless, I marked the parked truck as a'favourite' so at least I could find my way back! . The compass and map method are reasonably reliable and I have good fun finding plots, but when trees are very dense a gps would find the plots with greater accuracy.

I use a Getac and a Trimble handheld GPS for plotting trees, they both work fine but were more than £200. Using an app with aerial photos might work pretty well in most situations. I'm keen to try out GISpro soon. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gis-pro/id459109672?mt=8
