Does anyone know what the running gear diffs/gearbox/axles are like toughness wise in comparison to a defender. I know defenders can be a but of a rough ride and don't have the same lump as these pickups but I'd guess its the running gear which really counts when it comes to heavy towing and loading?

There really is no comparison. The landcruiser transmission are a lot heavier duty than the LR. Defenders are a bit like triggers broom at 200,000 miles. The Toyota stuff if looked after in this country is easily capable of 500,000. The toyota stuff is by no means perfect and parts are expensive also do some research just in case you find it does 10 mpg as that could be a real pain in the uk.

I was always under the impression that land cruisers were one of the best 4x4s hence the price of them really old ones command decent money. I was also told these vehicles can pull anything you put on the back of them including the moon

Hmm, I'm not so sure about this, from looking at various photos on internet, the defender salisbury axle/diff looks as substantial if not more so than the land cruiser ones. I'd need to see them both in the flesh to be convinced

Buy any decent Toyota and you wont look back. But if you like taking things to bits and love Landrovers and know them inside out stick with them at least the parts are cheap.
