£260 per day for a 1.5 tonner and it would never move out of the shed!

Local bloke is £100 a day 3 tonne with buckets and or botex timber grab.

 

Bit more for a driver.

I ask and get £260 a day me and machine, and if I don't it can damn well sit there in the yard.

 

Were I to put a driver on it, it could go out for a bit less- but nothing like some of the rates you see on eBay.

Doubt if a 1.5 ton mini digger has enough reach to clean ditches & dykes has it? Mine need a minimum of a 5 tonner & most need an 8- 13 tonner.

Had a good few days work done last summer with an 8 ton machine & a top notch operator @£250 per day inc diesel etc.

 

That's the funny thing- big machines are three-four times as much to buy as a 1.5t yet command only a small premium in hire rate pro rata for their weight. A mini is £50/day, a 7.5t is £100/day (machine hire only) from a local place. That's why I like smaller kit, much less investment and similar rates.

 

Your bloke with the 8 tonner was a touch too cheap, even if he hired one it would be machine £100/day, operator £150 (we all agree that's a fair rate?) which doesn't leave any room for the 40-50l of diesel burnt?

 

Bottom line is this- with my skill set I can get £150 for just my labour as a subby anywhere, any place. If I provide a mini digger, whether my own or hired in, it needs to cove all the extra costs- hire, transport, fuel, insurance. Which is at least £100 a day. If you cost your labour out at that, which seems to be the norm from threads on here, then you need the same.

 

If the 'going rate' is less, I won't bother. Same with logs.

The owner is also a time served mechanic, he has several older machines and maintains them himself.
