Would you do this live?

No MEWP, but the job was finished live by another climber today. Each to their own I suppose, but I stick by my original decision. I just think it isn't worth the risk when for a little bit of organisation you can get the line shutdown/earthed for free...

As I work on utilities, no, that looks definitely like a shutdown job, wouldn't even pole that! Hell, we wouldn't have touched the tree!

Yup,shutdown all day long. We have had our butts kicked recently for various crews clashing lines,bringing a few down. Mainly caused by doing things live which should be SD. No line is classed as insulated by WPD. You did the right thing by refusing and as others have said the fines could have ruined things for you all had the worst happen.

Can't believe this is a discussion. It's only a phone call and a bit of waiting for a shut down. Why take the risk? If your working close to power lines you should inform the network provider anyway. CJM (I think) hit the nail on the head.

Once again thank you everyone for all the feedback. It's really nice to have my decision reaffirmed by fellow professionals, and hearing your views has given me a lot of confidence in my own instincts

You are the one climbing and know your limits and safe working practices. All electric work should be done the correct way and you will make it home at the end of the day. If your boss wants to do it then let him, don't be a fool for anybody, well done for not doing it.

 

I'd just add to that statement. Under the HSE Act you have to take all practicable steps to protect yourself and those you work with sooooooooooo it's not quite as easy as just letting your boss do it, although I agree with the rest of sentiment. If you know full well the situation is dangerous then you should really do all that is possible to prevent him from putting his own life at risk. Diffult situation I know and I also appreciate that in this case, you were unsure of whether this particular scenario fitted into that category.
