I have thinned pops. Usually Protectected Trees which can't be removed.

Here's one being thinned and you can see another in the background before thinning.

I have found that if you don't thin it 'Too Much' it wont panic into pushing out epicormic growth.

Thanks guys - like your ideas Phenom :D

btw to the fell-and-replant brigade, have you ever wondered if you are part of the reason we're losing tree cover in towns? :P It seems a very gung ho response. There's nothing wrong with the tree (the shade is a mild annoyance, that's all) and no risk of subsidence - so it could have a good 40 years of useful life left in it. I've advised him to plant a slower-growing tree now in the other corner of the garden so there is a semi-mature there when the poplar pops its clogs.

If a tree is unsuitable for the site instead of topping it or heavily thinning, it makes more sense to fell and replace with a tree which will be well suited to the site. a topped tree will cost a lot more money with future inspections, pruning and will usually greatly reduce its lifespan. Id rather see a tree felled and replaced than topped if its in the wrong place. If money is no issue for him then id top or "pollard" but wait a couple of months for its energy reserves to build up and repeat every 5 years or so. What type of soil does he have?
