Just wandering if this setup is ok to use for coming down a pole? Seemed easier to add the figure of 8 into my working line.

Try this set up with the eight, it will give you enough friction and allow you to make some upward adjustment as well. That eight you have might be a bit large. You don't need a revolver but it works the best

I take it you had to tie your rope off at the top? In that case your hitch would still work without the need of the figure8 wouldn't it?

Why not just just have a prussic above. Any advantages this way?

No advantages this way just saves swapping bits over. Seemed very easy to just add the fig8 on to the hitch climber setup to descend.
