went to look at a short fence today (7m) of 4'6" tall feather edge fencing now materials are easy but what to charge for the labour ? 5x posts to dig in, concrete and rail up (1.5 hours for me and my labourer) then a return trip to board up (again 1.5 hours for me and him) now if I charge for 3 hours each for both of us its just not worth it after all the traveling and so on so what is reasonable ?

You don't need a labourer and you don't need to return (post quick etc) sets in minutes. Now your price will be worth it.

It's reasonable to charge for travel, why should you pay to go to a job that someone wants you to do? Either charge your hourly rate from leaving home or come up with a mileage price.

Travel is not cheap nowadays!

I agree post Crete done in a few hours. Why not charge a metre rate for all your fencing. It balances in the end from long runs to short runs.

im not going to tell my labourer to have an afternoon of because I want to go and do a job on my own!

This is the problem of doing small jobs while you employ a labourer

I would have put enough for an easy days work on my own, it wouldn't take all day but by the time you have faffed around with materials and travel not much left in a day to do much else.

If you must have a labourer there can you not try and tye it up with another small job to complete a day?

You ask what is reasonable? That's totally irrelevant to be honest. Price needs to be what ever you need to charge, no point in putting a reasonable price in if you can't make any money. As others have said, post Crete or dry mix rammed hard then water poured before you leave have it done in one trip. Job like that gotta be £30 mtr to even bother with.
