I'm not sure if I'm putting this in the right section, but here's my story:

Last summer I was working in a forestry. Myself and the fella with me stopped for lunch. Then we heard this sound in the distance of an big insect flying..

About 30 metres away we saw it-

It was a huge insect coming straight at us. It was black and yellow in colour, had at least 4 wings, and was at minimum the size of a small bird.. We panicked and ran for our lives.

We have no idea what it was and asked around but no one had seen/heard of these. We spoke to a farmer on the boundary of the forestry who had never seen them, but he had had a few calves the year previous to just drop dead for no reason in a field boardering the forestry..

Has anyone any idea what it might have been?

We have a couple of nests that I know the location of ( ordinary uk hornets) one behind some hanging tiles on the old farmhouse and one in the fork of a oak tree that I havent been brave enough to get really close to.

I know that wasps do not use the same nest each year but I get the feeling hornets may do. Anyone confirm/otherwise
