Hi everyone. I bought a 550 in November 2011. So far I've got a new petrol tank, new oil bleeder hose, new side cover, 2 new magnetos/coils, 1 new piston ring due to carbon build up, one new engine rebuild due to carbon build up, and I'm just after breaking the 11th chain brake band. I have 5 stihls, the oldest is 2009 and I've had 4 problems between the 5 of them. So my question is this: Do the "new and improved" 550xp's still have any of these problems? The pot has good drainage. I was afraid to go removing the dead wood because I'd say I'd be taking almost the whole crown off it? Should I just pollard it?? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

The tree is inside- I water it twice a day- with tap water from a well.. I should have included that the tree put on very heavy growth, nearly 6 inches in length, with slightly bigger leaves than the rest of the crown, in less than 3 months. I pruned them back and the tree went into decline almost immediately after that. I've no experience with these and have no idea how to prune the roots?? Is there still hope for it?? I thought the tree was after dying, but today there's a small bit of new growth at the bottom of the stem. What should I do to help/save it? This is the new growth: Bark also peeled of here: The tree has sentimental value and advice will be greatly appreciated Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

Googled them and that could well be him, but we THINK that our fella was bigger. He looked more bulky- we saw him from about 30 metres away.. Any idea how i would go about trying to trap one of these? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

I'm not sure if I'm putting this in the right section, but here's my story: Last summer I was working in a forestry. Myself and the fella with me stopped for lunch. Then we heard this sound in the distance of an big insect flying.. About 30 metres away we saw it- It was a huge insect coming straight at us. It was black and yellow in colour, had at least 4 wings, and was at minimum the size of a small bird.. We panicked and ran for our lives. We have no idea what it was and asked around but no one had seen/heard of these. We spoke to a farmer on the boundary of the forestry who had never seen them, but he had had a few calves the year previous to just drop dead for no reason in a field boardering the forestry.. I'm amateur at this and wondering what this is; Also dismantling a dying sycamore today with purple mushrooms on the dead wood in the crown, got no pictures of them but there was a red colour in the stem; Might be a stupid question but i haven't noticed it before and if I don't ask I won't learn. I do not consider dismantles brainless, but I'd like to be putting more thought into the job and be a bit more creative than cutting it down all the time. The customer did not want a pollard. they wanted to "top it down 10 or 15 feet". I'm on this site putting up pictures of my work to see if i can learn something so as to improve my work practices. I was hired by a landscaper to do the job so I didn't meet the customer. The landscaper was happy anyway and paid me going out the gate. I get what you're saying but I want to take these opportunities to get a bit of learning and practice under my belt for the day that it will matter. I'm climbing with year and a half and nearly everything ive done has been dismantles. I love my job but Working from the shoulders down isn't as interesting if ya get what I'm saying.. Done my first ever complete reduction on an ash tree this morning. I've never seen it being done, ive only ever read about it or spoke about it with other tree workers (there isn't much call for it where I am) so I was kind of winging it. I was talking to the fella that taught me this morning and he said take out 2 gob cuts both at 45 degrees to the felling direction and put in the back cut. Brought up the 550 for a bit more speed. Went perfectly. In hind site I probably over thought it a bit but I'd hate to get it wrong like.. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
