Earlier rangers (pre 06 I think) are real workhorses, but after that the gear ratio's are insane, once rolling at full towing capacity they are ok but it's the getting it rolling that's the problem, and as for reverse fully loaded towing forget it in high range and even in low range it's a joke.

It's easy to tell if it's the high ratio box stick it in reverse and if it pins you to the windscreen leave it well alone :)

Goes to prove ford do bugger all serious testing of their trucks anymore.

Ford don't even build their own trucks, let alone test them. The older Rangers /Mazda B2500s have much the better gear ratios for towing but it still pays to put them in low ratio for reversing a trailer. :001_smile:

I went in to Toyota and drove a new hilux double cab in October. Thought yeah nice have one of those if its less than 20k . Then found out its 26k and does not include a towbar or cap on the back or VAT. I looked on line and you can get a basic 2.5 litre for about 16k plus vat. Looked today that seems to have shot up to 18k aswell. yet to actually see a basic one

But that does and doesn't help, another problem with rangers is that when you put them in low range it automatically puts the front diff lock in which is fine if you are going in a straight line.

I would happily swap my 09 plate for an earlier immaculate one as I find towing and delivering all day with it is hard work, hence I now use the landies instead for most of the towing work.

What is the inside of a Mazda like. I wouldn't want it to be Spartan and uncomfortable but too many toys means mire things to go wrong. And is it comfortable?

How does it handle long runs. Im not intending on running from mine to Scotland but I like to know it can do it with out crippleing me.

When I was choosing a company vehicle, it was the gearing that took the new Ranger/Mazda out of the equation straight away. I liked my old one as a good solid basic work truck but the newer ones seem too aimed at the Sport SUV market for me. :001_smile:

I don't know about the newer ones but I never felt uncomfortable in the drivers seat of my old one for a couple of hours at a time. I'm 6ft 5 and built for comfort, not for speed, so you can see there is plenty of room. Unlike a Defender, I could drive it with the window up.
