I also cycle to work, ok it's only about 5miles but I find in the mornings it warms my legs up and I don't ache so much after a climb and on the way home it acts as abit of a warm down. Once I've got my lisence I'm still gonna cycle to work with my harness and helmet around each side of my handle bars just as I do now :)

I found doing dips and chins helped me. Bodyweight at first, then added weight with a dipping belt. Feel strangely light when climbing sometimes now.

 

I never get out of breath though 'cos I'm so slow!

 

The cycling sounds like a good bet, and it's far less boring than running.

 

Don't give up the ciders though, John. They are good for you.:closedeyes:
