Smokey cold start on ranger

Morning all, my ranger seems to be smoking a lot on a cold start of morning recently and also judders slightly but once it's been running a couple of mins it's fine- anyone got any ideas what it could be. Cheers dan

first thing is what color is the smoke.white = water vapor ,blue = oil burning black = unburnt fuel (diesel) hope this helps

If its juddering then most likely one of the glow plugs has burnt out, get a new set and it should be fine.

If its the glow plugs, check the relay too, had this on mine, put new plugs in, burnt them out again.

Just a word of warning, injectors can cause massive engine failure. If it is dribbling rather that spraying a nice jet pattern it can cause the piston to get too hot and it can melt the crown causing it to pick up the cylinder bore! Big money! Other problems if an injector dribbles while the engine is off it can give you a lot of smoke on start up as there is high quantities of diesel in the combustion chamber when you start it! If the injector is dribbling when it's off it may be doing the same when it's running, then the unburnt diesel can find its way into the sump and slowly fill the oil level up, eventually it will get that high it will start running on the diesel/oil mix and rev it's bollocks off until it goes bang!

I would get it checked out sooner rather than later it may save you loads!
