I'm skilled enough to know how little I know. Hence I need help on the bigger and problematic trees I'm felling. I've two large dead uns, a larch and a Douglas fir.

 

My arborist friend said with fierceness,

 

'you cannae burn those....you just cannae. The woods too good.'

 

I don't mill. I can't afford to invest in a mill. I can't afford to store the planks under cover and I can't market them.

 

Nothing's too good for firewood!

And if they didn't take hours picking through the log pile and then moan about paying what it would fetch in firewood we might be much more inclined to let them know. Keep calm and keep ringing up!

If you need a good warm fire more than you need a rustic table or bespoke coffin lid, then burn it .... burn it all!!!!!!!

Coming at it from the milling perspective - there is nothing above I disagree with in the slightest

 

Put more work into something and you should get more money out of it, so if you take a butt, ring it and split it, you have put your time and fuel into it, and once it has seasoned you will get more from it than selling it as a butt.

 

However, if you have other things to do that pay more per hour than the above, and if you have no particular need for the firewood or desire for the exercise, and either the site allows for extraction or milling on site is acceptable, it may pay to advertise it on here (with some photos) and just see if you get any takers. If not, you can always ring it up anyway.

there special trees, better known as prospective firewood, fell them, ring them, split them and burn them......theres going to be more than enough larch in the west of scotland just shortly
