They are also different weights, as in axle capacity, a U1200,U1300 are 7.5t, 1600 is about 10t I think but you get the idea.. the reason a 1600 is best for tree work is a combination of size, horsepower and the amount it can carry without overloading, you can carry the same on a 1200 but is easy to overload..if this makes sense !

I assume you need an operators license to run a 'mog?

Depends if its ag reg or hgv reg. But there are loads of threads on it if you search. Lots of mixed opinions and thought of as a grey area.

Iv often thought about going down the mog route for my fencing business. Starting to think it may be an option, I worked with and drove a u1000 for four years but never had my own.

My setup would be mog with post knocker (800kg) on the front, fencing stakes, wire, tools on the pickupbed and an I for trailer with a 3ton digger on the back. What size mog would be required for this do you think?

Also another thing which concerns me is repairs, is it something most agricultural engineers can sort out or does it have to be a mog specialist on the whole?

could you still run the chipper @ the rear with the crane ,would ther be any issues

Too much weight Johny on the back axle I would think.

 

It could be made to work with a bit of fabrication.

Then there's trying to get the spout past the crane.

 

It would be best to move the Hiab to behind the cab if you wanted a rear mount chipper.

 

The Chippers on the best place at the front.

That crane is a demount and it's made the same as the chipper mount. So that chipper could clip on the back and just take off the reverse gearbox and job done.

When I see a chiper on the front I always wonder do the insurance company know what it looks like and how far they stick out???? If they don't like bull bars they would have a fit if they saw a chipper!!!!

 

The safest place for a chipper all front mounts fall within the legal limmit of front over hang exsept the ones modified to go on the front may strech that I think .

 

When driveing you would be surprised how much visibility you have the only real problem with travelling with one on the fron other than a few sharp juct. Is shirt and tie folk in the mornig trying to jump in a gap in front of you that is occupied buy chipper

Oh right not far away then if you got the work load and the dosh then its a good choice of machine even if you get a u1000 with a front mount 7" nice box on the back will be be exspensive compared to a van and tow along but you capabilities will grow hugely

My Mog is a U1000, I used to have a 9inch chipper on the back but tbh it was not great would have been better on the front, I now only use our little 6inch on the back (forst).

In the last year I've spent about £3k on it but only £160 on service £450 on repairs to worn out parts and the rest was upgrades and body work. So I don't think this is to bad! the year before was about £250 that was a service and a brake calliper. for a 32 year old truck its doing very well!!

I fix some of the easy bits on it but if I can't the mechanics on the farm I have my yard fix it.

Would I buy a Mog now I am unsure I don't use it for what I bought it for as much now but I did have a lot of work where you would not get a transit or even a landy (with a chipper on it)

It has paid for its self 10 times over, I am now after a pickup hitch for it so I can tow a decent timber trailer behind it so it can be used in the woods more and also looking for crane to go on the back.
