Spuds Porting and Tuning Thread

On the exhausts on a 346 what do you do with the old outlet when out weld a pipe in?

 

On the 346XP there is no need to do this, an enlarged existing outlet makes the saw louder but not excessive. You may find your muffler is now much louder with the straight through pipe but see how it goes!

 

Normally I leave the old pipe as it is - no need to seal it!

Yes, that's what I meant spud, I just worded it poorly, my 385 is on a 36" bar, so the carb is tuned pretty lean just to make up the rpm, so should it be ported, I think the plug would turn jet black! Although I did price the 372 carb today, £140+!!

Likewise, my 357 is wound all the way in and running the rich side of correct, on a 15" but I'll assume the 385's carb will fit (fingers crossed)

I put a plate in where the spark screen once lived and drilled a 10mm hole and welded a pipe in, the original one was melting the top cover :thumbdown: I'm away to find a new 1 :001_rolleyes:

Try it, all you are trying to do is increase flow through the exhaust, I would run both outlets together rather than just one.

Putting a 36" bar on a stock 385 is asking a lot. Port it if you need to run it with that bar. The 385 takes well to porting, and simply removing the base gasket often gives good compression.

 

It sounds like you are wanting more revs and power than the saws want to give in their configurations. Is the 357 muff modded? Without any mods to the engines of both saws, swapping in larger carbs will cause more problems than solve.

Both saws are muff modded, but the 357 is ported, and on a 7t rim outcuts my 560 on an 8t rim

This weekend I have been porting a 346XPG, they respond well to the work and in the pics below, you can see a widenend exhaust port, blended in to the muffler.

 

The inlet port has been widenend and smoothed, the transfers shaped to the back of the cylinder and you can see the original slightly....modified:001_rolleyes:hole and my much widened outlet.

 

There really isn't any need to make a much louder front outlet as this allows the saw to breath and have a not too loud exhaust note. The saw now picks up real quick, very noticeable and cuts with a real urgency. COmpression is up from 155psi to 175psi.
