It's Acer triflorum. The rays and the bark have to say so. Look at that third pic and those short rays.

 

I know what you mean about the rays Graham, the wood looks to be denser in the pics than that of poplar, not sure about the bark of A. triflorum though

I respect Graham's thoughts, he isn't usually far off the mark when it has come to other identification posts.

 

These threads are always difficult, that's what makes them fun.

 

personally my first thoughts when I saw the pictures were that it is Quercus- oak and now Graham has made me look closer I am doubting poplar which was my second thought.

 

im going to have another beer and let you guys decide. :001_smile:
