Hawthorn - remove, thin or pollard..?

Hi All - Happy New Year!

 

The pictures are of a large hawthorn that a client of mine would like tidied up, or ideally removed. It's currently covered in ivy, and some branches will reach a phone line in a year or two.

 

It's in a conservation area, and the council are unwilling to have trees felled unnecessarily i.e. for light or asthetics, and have previously rejected a request for the tree to be felled.

 

So my thought is that the ivy is removed, and it could maybe be thinned or reduced in size (removing the very long/high branches), or basically pollard the tree back to a manageable size/shape.

 

Any thoughts on this much appreciated!

If the council are not allowing it to be felled then have they placed a TPO on it?

There's no TPO on that or nearby trees, but the conservation area status will still mean that any work needs to involve us notifying the council (who may then ask questions or TPO)

Yes I would remove the ivy and reduce it to a better shape, no need to remove a tree if it doesn't need removing!

Here we go again!

If the tree is in a CA you notify the council of your intention to fell the tree. They cannot refuse permision, because you are not asking for it; their only option to prevent you felling it is to serve a TPO within 6 weeks of your (s211) notification of intent to carry out tree works.

Not necessarily, councils can refuse but NOT put a TPO on it. Therefore you can go ahead
