Its like anything else mate....a lot of the things that are bad for us, also make a huge amount of revenue for companies and in turn the government through taxes...its not in their best interest to put us off buying canned dog foods....and besides, hows many people could afford to feed their pets fresh meat etc on a daily basis?

Buying raw chicken legs and thighs along with liver, pet mince and a few carrots etc works out cheaper than expensive commercial dog food, and even cheaper when you take into account vet bills, for the side effects like skin diseases, diabetes, renal failure etc etc,

Liver granted...not sure about chicken legs and thighs though....that stuffs getting quite pricey lately!

Oh Lee...as I know you appreciate good food, I found a place at Brent Eleigh that sells only grass fed beef and lamb. Stopped there the other day and picked up some lush rump steak, lamb chops and beef shin. They're slaughtering another of their red poll cattle ready for this weekend...im off there saturday morning to stock up on sirloin. It really tastes so much better than the supermarket crap!

I see your point Steve, hard to accept we can be sold stuff that kills us just so they can make a profit, but I don't underestimate the " love of money".

I do know a dog lover that feeds her lab organic mince everyday, she is a doctor, and can afford it!

Lucky dog!

Sounds really good Steve I'll have to give it a try, I've been dry aging beef joints lately fore ribs, briskets, silver sides, 35 day dry aged rib is totally awesome mate. Give it a try its easy but you need a seprate fridge

Iceland is full to the brim with food that will kill you! If you look in depth into raw food diets for dogs and cats you'll find you can't afford not to feed it to them, if you shop around you can find cheap meat Aldi chicken leg and thigh joints 2 per pack are about 120p some days you find them on offer for half price, due to a short sell by date

Offal is very cheap, years ago people would by horse meat etc from nacker yards and offal etc from slaughter houses, you can buy bulk pet mince online

" Iceland"

And Tesco and every other I guess!

Don't see much wrong with horse meat really, they eat grass like cows and sheep.

Love offal, black pudding, haggis etc.

Comes from "waste not want not" era. Think we are headin back there!

We're lucky here in Taupo as we have a local farm or two supplying beautiful grass fed beef to the local butcher and it's CHEAP. I'm also due a christmas lamb for a job I've not long completed.

I'm still struggling on a few ideas for salad dressings so if anyone has any recipes it would be much appreciated. Someone mentioned addiction to sugar too. I've only been off the stuff three days and I can already feel the cravings. A handful of currants usually sorts it out. I have decided though that I'm not giving up the milk. Cut down, yes, but not give up.

As for the dog food; chicken around these parts is massively expensive. Even the carcasses have rocketed in price. Heaps of hunting dogs in these parts and the super markets and butchers have cottoned on to the fact that there's easy money to be made from waste chicken parts. I do know that dog roll is awful stuff though. My old Rotty nearly scratched himself raw after I fed it to him.

I copied this from a Turkish restaurant in London

1 third pomegranate syrup (available on line in NZ I would think)

1 third olive oil

I third red wine vinegar or the vinegar from a jar of pickled red cabbage or pickled onions

mix and add to a good mixed salad, you can add pomegranate seeds to it also, I often finsh the salad off with an extra drizzle of pomegranate syrup.
