A better question would be why file guide?

Just learn to sharpen without a guide then you wont need any let alone many

Because I do a better job with one than without :001_tongue:

Yes I know some of you are experts freehand but I like this kind of guide as it is just as fast as a bare file but makes the height right and gives a reference for the angle 25/30 degrees.

That's only because you haven't put a bit of time into "bareback filing":laugh1:

The thing I would not trust myself on freehand is keeping the side plate angle consistent at 80 degrees.

I've wrorn ever to buy ythe Oregon ones again, the spring keeps jumping off or getting bent and not working. The Stihl ones are much much better all round. Even the wood on the handle lasts longer.

I have started filing bareback towards the end of the life of a chain. That way you haven't progressively lost the right depth and gone too far into the ties.
