Do you pay travel time and sick pay??

We do a lot of travelling about sometimes(not often)up to 3 hrs travel. I pay for overnight fees even meals. They are employees.

Contract I've got is I only pay max 45mins each way. Sick pay only after the 3rd day with a doctors note. Do you think I'm being harsh? I just can't warrant paying 2 or 3 guys x amount plus my diesel/machinery for sitting on their arses?

Surely you have to pay employees from when they start work/clock in. You can't expect them to not be paid for the drive to the job site or the drive back to the yard.. It's not there fault you book work an hour and a half away..

I expect my guys to be in the yard for 830 and normally leave by 430. Price jobs/set wages accordingly. If its a long commute it is factored into the quote.

As to sick pay my contracts are the same, losing 3 days pay before getting sick pay may seem mean but it cuts down on monday morning hangovers..

The sick pay bit is acceptable, but if they injure themselves at work It would be only fair to pay them for time taken off. When I was employed thats how it worked for me.

I think you're being harsh on the travelling time and I wouldn't work for you (don't mean to be harsh) if I didn't get paid for time I was at work, technically they're still working even if driving to a site. If you are worried about fuel costs maybe you need to price that into long distance jobs, unless you've got a contract with a utility company, then you should of agreed terms where you get paid for per mileage for working out of certain radius

The fact that you pay for meals when you and the lads are working away is a nice gesture!:thumbup1:

The sick pay situation is fine IMO.

No way on this earth would I drive to your job or even be a passenger in a van if you weren't paying me.

Their start time will dictate when they are paid from genereally ie if they had to come to your yard then drive 3 hours to site then they should be paid for this, same as if they came to your yard and drove to a job 20 minutes away, it amounts to the same thing and if you are looking at work with further travel time that it should be costed in accordingly. You might not win the work because of this but if you decide to take the contract on then it comes off your bottom line not your employees.

As far as sick pay goes, then doctors note for more the standard allowed for self certification, think that's 5 days now but if you injure yourself at work leading extended time away then it's standard SSP. If you continue to pay the employee at their full rate, you are admitting liability for their injury (if self inflicted) and your insurers will be looking at a rather large payout.
