In the workplace there are different categories of "worker". There is the grafter, busting his nuts to do the job, get the brush out, carry the logs out, rake up, and get on. There is the "empty can", he rattles around with a load of bluster, hey look how much I'm (not) actually doing, shouting at everyone else because he feels he's doing the lions share, but does next to nothing. There is the "puppy dog", the boss chucks him a ball, he runs around the yard wagging his tail furiously, chases up and down and gets nowhere, comes back and the boss pats his head, waiting for he ball to be thrown again. Then there is the older guy, who just gets on with the job, doesn't grizzle or complain, teaches the less experienced, quietly sorts any problems on site and without moving fast, gets through a pile of work. We're only human, with faults of our own. It's down to the bosses, the management, to gel together a team that can get the job done, with the minimum of hassle, and in each team with be a mix of different people.

 

Very well put, translates the same in any language and country.

Theres all sorts

1. Older experienced- know how to keep the day fresh

2. Knowledgeable- the go to guy when things have to be thought through

3. Gymmy- want to lift the most, the quickest.

4. The learner- Keen to learn so others are willing to teach, but that means he's a bit slow and slows the team down- future potential though

5. The stop and talk- always stops what he's doing to talk about stuff.

6. The clown- not necessarily good at anything but has learnt to cover this by making everyone laugh. Most important.

7. The backstabber- everyone thinks he's their friend but behind their back runs them down especially to the boss. This covers up for their inadequacies.

8. The organiser- gets the job done on time or early by having everything to hand and gently getting everyone doing their best.

Theres probably a few more and I've worked with all of these. It takes more than just brawn to make a team.

More importantly, you usually get a mix of the above with everyone.

All my team (they are all under 26 and wear hoodies) work very hard and very carefully.

I've never had a complaint about them and I can leave them on a job knowing they will leave a good and lasting impression.

 

They were all good friends at school so there is excellent banter but they all look out for each other and they all know that whatever they don't do as individuals the others WILL have to do.

 

I cannot claim credit for this, it's how they are. But I think they are great and I try to treat them with a bit of respect.

 

The rules are simple -

1. Work in a professional manner.

2. The job isn't finished till the customer is happy

3. When the days allocated jobs are finished you can all go home (regardless of how early).

4. Any problems - talk to me first.

 

We sometimes finish as early as 12:00 but if a days money has been earned, then a days money is paid. This afternoon we spent 3 hours playing golf (paid for by yours truly).

 

I do not accept that these guys are made of cheese, they work hard and they help me to run a profitable business. If they didn't I sure as hell wouldn't winge on this, or any other forum - I'd do something about it.

Your an employee, so your fellow workers are your bosses concern, not yours.

 

yes your right, but is it fair when one ends up carrying three others?

 

one a whinging big girls blouse, the other an i phone addict, thumbs on one hand half attempted drag of one bit of brush in the other etc etc etc

 

 

I know how this guy feels, but agree he isnt exactly eloquent in his point making!:lol:

Shane, that's how I am...

 

As you say if the days wages and profit are made quickly sometimes my workers are away after lunch...it allows me to catch up on quotes/books etc...I was an employee once..

 

If they graft and use their brains and generally 'help' me be profitable and efficient and keep the customers happy I couldn't care less if the full 8 hour shift is done or not.. Their fulfilling their job, I make sure if they do it quickly and professionally everyone wins if we're all happy..

 

The less I have to think about the better good guys can be a god send...bad guys are a total waste of time and money and are a pain in the hoop..

 

Here's to the good guy's may we all find them quickly.. :)
