Wasps in log piles

During summer splitting logs for firewood I had a big problem with wasps, they seemed to be attracted to the sap, they especially love willow!

Now it's got colder I don't have the wasp problem while splitting, only that they seem to be hibernating in the log pile and we are bringing them into the house hitching a ride in with the baskets of logs, just had to squish the second one this weekend.

Any one have the same problem??

Got stung chipping some willow a while back.Hand came up like micky mouses glove.Cut down a big dead oak in some grounds by a lake and they were everywhere.Think they must like the scent of cut wood.No nest in the tree but they were all over it.No other issues this year and they should be dead soon.
