I shall be keeping hold of it at my yard so its there longterm if you ever want some.

In the meantime is it a nice timber for turning? Any pics?

never turned any before but i think stihlben had recently and posted them earlier in the thread.

 

rather than it sit in the yard i would recommend it be split up the middle of the stem taking away too much tension that can build up radially.

 

i don't know if it's a splitter or not but it bight be better not to take the risk

use a saw, i tried spliting abit of laurel to get a nice clean pair of halves but it turned out to be really twisty and one half ended up in flames. something that size should be split cleanly through the pith with a sharp chain.

 

if its 20"diameter how long is it?

Ok ill revert back to the usual of running it through with a saw then.... approx length is 8ft. No branches or defects to speak of

that's unusual for a mag, i usually see these things splitting at the base in to two or three stems.

I've got a windblown magnolia booked in for Thursday this week. The tree has quite a nice straight main stem on it 18-20" diameter. Could be nice for some small bowl blanks. Anyone had any good results from turning Magnolia before?

 

I once cleared one; M. acuminata. The guys from the Greenwood Trust were keen to get hold of it but, as I remember, were disappointed with the timber.

The magnolia trees as opposed to garden shrubs usually produce a straight bole.
