I had a play with a few different size drills a while back and I think I decided on 7mm.

Wood type does make a difference, some requiring lighter cuts than others

K cheers bobh 👍

Still alot to do, to get rid of that end grain. But a quick 10" redwood platter

The wood that i attach too. Using the wood worm screw.

ahah, the woodworm screw...

that makes more sense now, as has been suggested try taking lighter cuts for softer woods and try different sizes for different woods but i find the best way is to measure the shaft of the screw between the thread.

oh and you have heard of 6.35mm drill bits. they are called 1/4"

Started two things today.

First a lab vase which ill finish and reshape when i put the smaller jaws on the chuck.

Then my first natural edge cherry bowl. Splits appeared 👎 and i went to deep which showed the hole from the wood worm screw hole. So ill inlay a turned disc so enough. ImageUploadedByArbtalk1426435736.014001.jpg.26d5365918cf5b1ca926e16be4538c19.jpg

Dan - Looks like you've had a busy weekend and off to a great start with the new lathe, addictive isn't it! Hope you have managed to sort out problem with the woodworm screw - as Steve has said taking lighter cuts with very sharp tools will help. What sharpening system are you using?

TWiG - Another great selection of your work. The spalted ash hollow form being my favourite. I would imagine its quite hard to get such a good finish on spalted ash without the wood picking out. I have not got into colouring any of my work yet - how do you find the coloured pieces sell compared to the natural wood items?
