when i turned it i did do it as a wet bowl and just let it do what it did really.

i did not want to dry the whole thing in thick section as i know that brown oak yield is very low so though that i'd do it like that and if it comes off it comes off.

thankfully it worked.

i've has other bits that have cracked so am not sure how to prevent it. sealing didn't do that much to protect it when i cut turning squares or bowl blanks.

i kept that bowl wrapped up in a blanket in the shed and it seemed to do the job...

Thinking of a lathe ,240v I'm a beginner but want a good machine that has plenty of use, record cl3? Any ideas on what I'd need fancy going down the bowl turning route

Cheers

For what its worth, I bought a CL3 with the outboard bowl attachment 3 years ago and I am really pleased with it. I don't have the variable speed upgrade but moving the belt onto a different pulley to change speed is a 10 second job. I have turned some big bowls and small pens on it so it is a versatile machine. I have also found Record to be a good company to deal with.

keep your eyes on ebay and find a cheap one near home.

if you want to go for a good one my only experience is with the jet 3520b that i bought that is the dogs kahunas...

i reccomend going to a turners shop where you can try one out and size it up or find a local turner who may let you have a go.

Basic set of chisels to start with but dont go for the cheap ones, Record are ok to start with moving on to Hamlet,Crown and Robert Sorby.

CL3 should come with a drive spur and tail centre for spindle turning.

If you're doing bowls you will need a face plate or chuck or both.Thread size for CL3 is 3/4 x 16.

Look in firewood pile before you buy any decent blanks, split logs can make good bowls.
