Buy cheap buy twice?

Done firewood a few years ago, but since the arb side of the business got increasingly busy I didn't have time to do it. Sold the road tow Balfor 16 ton splitter.

Now however I have a wood burner, and need a small scale splitter.

A vertical jobbie looks ideal for my needs.

Like the look of the thor aplino 6 ton electric.

But is this over kill?

Heard good things about the Handy vertical electric splitter it's half the price.

But will I regret buying it? And wish that I had spent the extra money.

Any help and advice gratefully received?

if it was just for personal use i'd probably keep the rightsized stuff from jobs and stuff that splits nicely like chestnut ash sycamore.....and do it by hand. If you need a fair bit then get the staff on it! Youre paying them. I know you like to crack the whip :001_tt2::biggrin: only a friendly jab mate. If you do buy get one with resale value but decide on a budget

Have seen the mitox, do you have experience with one? It was the handy that took me as riko sell them. Must be half decent was my take on it.

I flog the groundys so hard they can barely walk let alone swing an axe. Lol

Have the mrs at home all day so we do go though a fair bit of wood. I know a lot of guys who say its as quick to do it with an axe and yeah it is on the bigger stuff but I have taken a lot of elms down this year and that sh!t is like concrete.

looked at Thor when I got the Balfor. From memory both brands are at the top of the field.

Like the pedal knife positioner thingy.

Trying to make life easier even bought an arbortrolly. GASP.

I bought this splitter two years ago and got it on offer with £50 off..

Rewired it so it's single handed operation and it does about 100 cube a year....quite amazing in my book.. 4 ton fast (fine for straight stuff) and 8 ton slower for the ugliest knotty stuff. Works a treat and doesn't break the bank..

I'm saving for a wallenstein next though but I can't knock northern tool (probably Chinese) machine. I have also made a custom table so the wood doesn't fall away and saves the back :)

Also have a chunk of Yew attached to the 'pushing face' to reduce the stroke making production quicker...it's amazing how much time you save with a bit of seat belt, chunk of wood and a bit of checker plate on the front!

I hear you on the yew, but can you elaborate on the other bits?

My 5t Alko is alright but too slow.
