I've Just found out my 550 which I've owned for about 18 months needs a new barrel piston and rings. I've been quoted £300+vat. I'm very annoyed to say the least, I'm not a full time tree surgeon and the saw has not been worked too hard. I only use it for sneading.

Do I write it off, see what I can get for it and buy a new saw? Or do I bite the bullet and get it fixed?

I would like to know why it need a new pot and piston first , and if it really does . Did it nip up ? wrong mix or air leek making it run lean ? Have you actually seen the damage ?

I haven't seen the damage yet but before I make a decision I will want to see it. I was running it on the right mixture with Husqvarna 2 stroke. It was losing power and become a right pain to start, hence why I took it in to get looked at.

Well if they have it apart I would want to see the damage and if you were running the correct mix then all I can think is there must be an air leak . Fuel line split ? crank seals gone ? carb come loose ? . Could be a warranty job ?

There was a little tiny bit of very fine dust in the carb but nothing major. The air filter seems fine too! I thought you only get 12 months warranty?

I thought the new Huskys were 2 years . I have a 560 from 2011 but thats been fine .

The tech will be able to tell whether it is the plating that has worn, whether the saw has ingested chip/dust or nipped up through leanrunning/bad fuel/air leak etc.

18 months is nothing, I would be concerned about the saw after the repair if a route cause isn't found!

What colour was the plug?
