Has anyone here got experience using both the Gransfors maul and the x27? I own a cheapo machine mart 3kg maul, which does the job when splitting small amounts. I have been using a gransfors maul for the last year and loved it and thought i'd buy one for processing larger amounts of wood. But if the x27 is better, and cheaper, that seems the obvious choice.

Anyone used both?

I've owned and used the large spitting maul from gransfors for years and can only say its a work of art and a pleasure to use, it's split tons of serious wood and its none the worse for it.... It's the only maul for me...

I've not had experience of the gransfors maul but it was my first consideration, but then i read so many great reviews of the Fiskars X27.

For even bigger stuff I'm now thinking of getting a Gransfors splitting wedge and use that with a standard sledge hammer (which i already own).

If you get the splitting wedge Steve, be sure to let us know how it performs please, 👍

From what i've read it is the best splitting wedge you can get, and yeah i'll let you know how i get on.

The Fiskars X27 axe arrived today - it's surprisingly light in the hand.

I gave it 3 strokes through the Fiskars sharpener and that gave it a really good sharp edge. The sharpener is plasticky but it definitely does the job well.... I imagine it would get damaged easily if something was dropped on it so best to keep it away from heavy logs, etc crushing it.

The axe head protector cover is quite handy as it has a handle for hanging the axe up on a wall. Ideal for us as we have a 2 year old and he already likes the look of it!!

Not had a chance to chop anything yet, hope to get 10mins on it tomorrow; here it is:

Is the fiskars sharpener folks preferred way of keeping the x27 super sharp? I do find the metal they're made of is real soft and soon dents!

I bought one of those sharpeners, its now my preferred way of propping my shed door open.

Absolute rubbish, an oil stone is far better.

Well, I don't think I've sharpened my X27 in 100 tons of hardwood and still counting. It doesn't appear to be suffering from it - it just slips through rings like, well, like, err,... best I don't finish this sentence ;-)

So if you've got an oilstone around, great. Otherwise, just don't bother...
