I use an X27 for most of my stuff, and a Spear and Jackson maul for the stuff that needs brute force. A good combination. I rarely go out with just one of the two.

I use a 6lb maul I bought from a supermarket for £10 and a polypropylene handled felling axe I bought damaged from a flea market for £1, welded the edge and sharpened it and they do the job for me. The maul chipped a chunk out of the edge so I re-profiled it with the angle grinder and it worked better than before. I like the look of the 27" Fiskars axe it looks purposeful and I think I would invest in one if my present one broke.

For the X27, do people prefer the shorter version (122460, 722mm) or the longer version (122500, 915mm)? I'm guessing the longer version has more splitting power, but you need to be a bigger bloke (or lady!) to use it efficiently without tiring?

Whoops, just figured out the shorter one is the X17, not an X27. So people prefer the 27 to the 17, it would seem?

I got a Helko Vario 2000 splitting axe from Gustharts last week. Very pleased with it 1.5kg model. Great service as well chaps.

 

If you want a Helko I should get one now as I understand that the company has gone bust. I do believe someone is trying to recover the company.

 

I have a Helko Vario 2000 and a Fiskars X27 and prefer the Fiskars.
