I have seen blades bent (after a ratchet strap found its way through). Yes the front edge was damaged but no shattering. This shows a good level of hardening & tempering. Blades were Original TW. Most important thing (pattern or original) to remember is the keep them sharp as this reduces the loading on the blade & associated parts

I use both genuine and copy blades, though 90% of the time ive gone with saturn blades due to cost. The only blade ive had fail in 6 yrs, was this timberwolf one.

 

that was a well worn blade. note the score line for wear limit. I throw mine away well before they are that bad.

 

could it be that older blades at the end of their working lives are most likely to fail.
