Blade Failure in Jensen

Chipping up some hazel stems the other day and it happened, ting ting ting ......then bang in the back of the truck!

I then turned the machine off and proceeded to walk to the back of the truck and to my horror there in the middle of the chips lay a quarter of one 6inch blade. Expecting the worse i opened up to reveil the fly wheel and sure enough the blade had failed on the outside edge running to one side of the bolt hole, the force of the blade failing had also bent back the lip which the blade sits on.

Thankfully that was all the damage done and i duly had the flywheel welded back up and it seems ok.

My worry is that could it happen again? the blades had been sharpened twice and were in good condition and were purchased a couple of months ago from those well known chipper blade people up north.

Do i tell them whats happened and try for a refund or just count my losses and use original Jensen blades? at twice the cost.

I welcome your thoughts

One of the main causes of blade failure is not cleaning the blade seat properly when fitting new blades.

The tiniest amount of muck behind the blade when it is tightened up will put stresses on it resulting in failure.

I've seen loads of blades changed without scraping the seat clean

The anvil appears to be ok. Do you mean the torque settings on the blade? Because the bolts were still in place

i had same problem with my 528. both blades snapped thru outer bolt hole. i scrape the blade seat clean and wire brush it before refitting so i knew it wasnt down to that, blade bolts were nice and tight but when looking in comparison to my other blade sets they were alot thinner so i put it down to that as i have never had a blade failiure since then on my alternate blade sets

I agree with tractor 10, if you use original blades, correct torque settings and bolts, keeping the blade and seat scrupulously clean you should have no problems. I always "rang" my flat and round blades to listen for a dull sound, if it rang dull, then an internal fault may be present.

I recently ordered a set of blades from the UK,I was told that Jensen made 9 & 11mm thick blades for the 528.Best to check which thickness is right for your machine.

I wonder if your blades broke because the thinner blades added to much gap between the knife and the Anvil?
