Helmet lifespan

This has been prompted by a change of advice by Petzl, they now give a max lifespan of their helmets (depending on type) of up to 10 years.

Anyone know if Husqvarna have / are going to do similar?.

At present I'm operating on 3 or 5 years depending on helmet makers recommendations.

This all goes out the window once they've been run over/dropped out of the tree/used as missile when the tenth tree that day gets hung up etc etc.

Protos users - whats the lifespan on your firemans helmets?

Regardless of what petzl may state, in tree work 10 year life span for a helmet is just not viable.

Number 1 degrading of plastics is uv rays from our sun,

Number 2 oil spray from a running saw and also petrol fumes are just as likely to cause the helmet to weaken.

The list goes on when you look at what we do to them, 5 years is more than enough time to cover the cost of one on a daily basis. When you look at it it really is the most used piece of PPE we use.

And I once was told on this forum that although the hygiene kits seem cheap and effective there really is no substitute for something new...

Obviously this is my own view on helmets and others may differ :)

Adam,

My situation is a little different to yours. If the helmets concerned where being used day in day out I doubt they'd get to two years. The helmets I'm concerned with are cleaned after use and dry stored out of UV. Hence the extended working life.

As for oil spray, I have my doubts that veg oil is particularly corrosive to plastics, but I'll get on to Lyon to see if they've an opinion on it.

The question I posted doesn't mean I'm gonna let my inspection regime lapse to a 10 yearly slam dunk of the old helmets.
