Ah it made my day it had class colours on it which isn't that visible from the photo. Is there any way you can tell the sex from a photo?

ahaahh thats what that is...

 

i had one fly in to my workshop the other night and thought it may have and elephant hawk moth as i knew it was part ofthe hawkmoth family but dont know any other species. saved me looking it up.

Indeed there is, and this holds true for all of the macro moths.

Female moths advertise their presence to males using pheromones.The females are not really interested in other females and so have no means of detecting them.

Males on the other hand are VERY interested.

You can sex pretty much any moth by looking at its antennae.

Males have large feathery ones and females have slim ones.

This one looks like a female (with the caveat that picture quality is not great).
