Sorry only viewed the first post picture. Yes they are opposite so probably Acer but not davidii.

 

Maybe the variant, Ernest Wilson?

 

Lets keep it nice guys, this has been a difficult one to pin down on an id,but no doubt we will get it pinned down with discussion.

The guy wanted an ID, it wasn't a fun quiz. And for a while there he had been convinced by others it was a Hornbeam, wrongly.

It wasn't even close.

Yep, I'd lean towards that definitely. Even some of the experts don't agree on A.davidii, some treating subsp. groserii as a subspecies and others a species in it's own right.

This is a good thread! not an easy ID, It is hard to give an ID from pictures and sometimes even when its in front of you! , but in my opinion this is where we learn something- Getting the books out and starting a process of elimination.

This interesting, especially as I have to do some work on what looks to the same species. I didn't know what it was either. Going with Acer distylum - so thanks.

I'd say Acer davidii cultivar of some kind, there's a big variation in leaf size/shape with the various cultivars
