Is this what's killed it or something that's happened after ?

I think I read/heard that there all doomed due to a virus or genetics or summit

Anyone clarify please

I think there is a link to the very deep frosts we have had over the last few years. For three years in a row we had minus 18-20 and I noticed the decline of Robinias round about after this.

Whether it stresses them and weakens them to pathogens ???

I'll defer to your expertise on the smell of sweaty maggots  but the greenbottles were round the roots in numbers, presumably attracted by the foul stench.

I'm looking at 2 robinias locally that we planted 10-15 odd years ago. Both on clay soil. Haven't shown much growth this year. I fear they are dying. It's either prolonged cold or prolonged wet and of the two, I'd favour the prolonged wet.

Paulonias locally haven't shown any signs of damage though these are on lighter soils.

As you know, the clay soil will hold the water up in the topsoil, & in the soil surrounding the roots, in gravel or well drained ground it is less of a problem.
