Large urban tree failure

Very sad story from New York

Pregnant Woman Killed by Falling Tree Limb in Kissena Park - Flushing - DNAinfo.com New York

read from another source that "there have been Twelve people killed or injured by trees in New York City over the last eight weeks, according to parks advocate Geoffrey Croft"

I imagine that there will now be a tight focus on tree inspection across the city following this latest tradegy

12 people in 8 weeks? Do we know if weather has been exceptional for the time of year in any way David?

W

I don't know to be honest Warren,

other reports about this incident state that it occured during still weather.

"Witnesses said it was a calm evening in Kissena Park when Li-Dikov was killed, with hardly even a breeze."

"One witness said the oak tree crashed down without any warning"

I've done a few emergency jobs over the years and its fifty fifty, some caused by the weather others on fine days, in most cases there was a noticae cause which could of been identified by an inspection.

Even the big storms in the late 80's early 90's have left there mark leaving trees liable to collapse/failure still very sad news.

Looks like it was a sprawling crown, very lopsided.

This illuminates the need to identify overextended branches and asymmetric crowns as action items, instead of focusing on holes and shell wall thickness and other bugaboos.

Was hoping you'd turn up to give some stateside perspective.

Do you think this (and other reported tree failures) will pressurise Local Authority tree managers to fell more trees or up the level/quality of inspections on trees in urban locations on your side of the pond?

I get the feeling that the press over there are baying for some tree culling?

With respect to the family of the deceased, it would be a shame if all the hard work of installing the benefits of trees in the public pysche via initiatives like 'i-tree' was forced to take a backward step.

David, I wish i could say. I have a mate on staff there and hope to connect with them by autumn. No idea where they are getting advice from but your fears are real; many consultants here use the TRAQ form on a witch hunt for defects instead of giving the tree a say in the matter by assessing strengths and weaknesses together.
