Anyone make their own chain?

Got the kit and a reel of chain and I've made my first loop, not a lot of info on the Internet for the questions I have, and whilst a few YouTube videos show you the process they don't cover some things.

 

Thought is put some questions out there and see if anyone can help.

 

Made a loop 66 drive links, I have even cutters on the left and right hand side of the chain, however there is a substantial gap between cutters on the joins section. I could add another cutter in (providing it didn't bend under pressure of the chain breaker) however this would lead to an un even number of cutters on each side.

 

Any tips would be gratefully received.

that is normal as far as i no all the chains i use (that i buy) all have a gap where they are joined.

Is the gap as big as the one in the picture? Had a look at a husky chain that I bought and couldn't make out a gap of any significance

Ok. It's not uncommon to get either two left or right cutters together when making a chain. Just the way it works out. I wouldn't worry over a gap too much either.

 

If the gap bothers you next time start a loop by removing to the next cutter first and then count out the drive links and split the chain.

 

To be honest it makes no odds over having two cutters of the same side next to each other.

Right ok, was worried that it was going to pull to one side / cause excess vibration or anything else. Just looks strange but good to know its ok.

If you liik at a Stihl loop for a 14" 200t there are two Rh cutter one behind the other , then it goes alternate. I use that as my start and finish point for sharpening . I won't matter it you insert one or leave one out ......

Per Stubby's comment the chain on my wee 026 has two same side cutters adjacent.

A very useful guide when sharpening.

Still "narks" me though.

But not enough so as to feel compelled to buy a bar with an evenly balanced chain.

When making mine I some times get a gap like that shown in the pic but it doesn't make any noticeable difference when the saw is in use. Like you say you could go to the trouble of adding in an extra cutter but at the waste of an another tie strap I wouldn't bother.
