just saw this on the news this pile of woodchip destined for the drax power station in yorkshire

 

amazing amount does anybody have any input on this story

 

I cannot comment on your zip file as I haven't opened it but look at this

As I understand it Drax cannot meet new standards for burning coal but get FITs for burning wood. EU laws generally prevent wholesale clear cutting US don't, if you cut for logs you end up with offal. Pelletise the offal and it's cheap to ship, is only 1/2 the density of coal ( so not much derating of generating capacity) and can go through the pulverisers which woodchip cannot.

 

Meanwhile we cannot get rid of chip locally so export it to France.

There was a fairly long piece on the PM programme on Radio 4 this evening, at around 17.45. Lots of concern over the source, much of it coming from logging of the hardwood swamp forests in the southern states.

Why can't they get it here, can't be good for the planet shipping it half way around the wold , mite as well just burn coal

+1 thats the bottom line if drax will pay for it they will ship it. but with the amount of chip and other wood by products in this country why are we not using uk stuff bet its the wrong type hence importing it. its mad

iam sorry the link wont open up it was one the 10 pm news last night on bbc 1

it is posted on the bbc website concerning woodchip from usa the pictures and the write up about it is staggering, the pile of woodchip this guy is standing on is massive

 

it doesnt make sense that this is substainable and a good move for the future

I just recently heard of a local company who supply to the biomass market importing chip from Scandinavia, they claim they cant get it in this country so cheap. Comes in on barges
