Log Bird Box

Was in the Garden Centre today and came across bird boxes made from Silver Birch Logs. Basically 8'' diameter log had been hollowed out and hole cut in front for entrance. They haven't been band sawn.Does anyone know what they used to hollow the log out?

I've made a few myself in the lathe.

Part a disc off the log hollow it out drill 25 mm hole 3/4 of the way up drill small hole and glue a twig in as a perch, attach disc back with a few small pins,I do mine with a arched top so water runs off better.

Got one in the garden with finches showing a bit of interest. :001_smile:

I bought two of those a few years ago. I thought that they might be stronger than the softwood boxes but the local woodpeckers soon made short work of enlarging the holes to get in easily and now they love to use them in the spring for "drumming".
