Very large oak / Root failure

We had a very large oak come down at Bicton College which was due to white rot fungi and shake.

 

We had to anchor into a Chestnut juxtaposition to the Oak and reduce the crown so we could deal with the main stem.

 

A series of gob cuts and straight holding cuts/step cuts was used to process the main stem.

LOL your way off with 30 tonnes mate, more like half that omg have you got your windblown ticket or not, because i would not have severed the stem from the rootplate like that! but i guess if you have an arbtalk account you must know best

You've got a point. Should have tied it down with 10 ratchet straps, supported it with 3 tower cranes and then trained a lemur to sever the root plate with a two stroke beaver while you call instructions from the safety of a nearby oak with 6 anchor points...

I have a large oak, similar to yours but it's fallen off a rock face and taken the whole root plate with it. And it's now at the top of a steep hill just to make things even more dangerous

Can you explain what you mean by "shake" being one of the reasons this tree failed please?

It is not something I have heard of before.
