turfing

Hi guys, silling question time!

Can anyone give me advise on laying turf on sand.

I have been laying turf for 30yrs, strip old, rotovate, etc etc,

Just looked at a job, multiple lawns on a large housing site and project manager suggests stripping old lawns off, putting river sand down and levelling it then laying turf onto the sand. He says hes had this done before and its quick and less mess.

I like the idea but am not sure, certainly quick and easy and easy to get levels right. Obviously grass likes sand and will grow fine but the roots will have to get in deeper to find food and drying out could be an issue.

Please comment.

Am I the only fool whos still doing this the hard way?

we dont use sand, whilts is speads lovely as noted the grass will go yellow quickly as there is, well no nurtients in it.

we use a fine grade sanded double compost from our local green waste merchant. all green wast debris rechurned and churned and churned again and again, its not cheap at £32m3 but its superb and we also use it for our raised beds and vegatable beds we build.
